Eruyt Village

The climax of the scene with Fan and her sisters comes with Jote, Fran, and Mrjn having a disagreement. Like Fran, Mrjn believes that Jote's isolationism of the Viera people is wrong. The two younger sisters have similar ideals and I believe that much of Mrjn's understanding of the ideals comes from the fact that she deeply misses her older sister Fran. Jote tries to explain to Mrjn as nicely as she can but Fran comes to her assistance. Fran insists that the freedom may be won but at the cost of losing family, the past, her home, and abilities. She states that this isolation is not for Mrjn and tells her that she has but one sister left to her. This understandably upsets Mrjn and she leaves with tears streaming down her cheeks.

Jote is also saddened by this. I get the idea she would have loved to welcome Fran back (but couldn't). Fran understands that Jote must uphold hte laws of the Viera, and I wonder if in the past she had not. She still longs for her sister's love and guidance. I feel this is proven when she asks Jote to read the Wood for her because Fan is afraid that the Wood hates her. Jote says that the Wood misses her and wishes she would return, Fran knows this is a lie. Jote then tells her the truth that the Wood is jealous of the Humes that took Fran from her. Fran counters with the idea that she is as the humes are now. She does, however, bid her sister goodbye.

The few moments that the sisters share is really rough for me as an older sister. I understand Jote's motivations, though I do not agree with all of them. I understand why Fran wanted Mrjn's help instead of Jote's. It would have been much easier for Fran to see her little sister that adored her than her older sister that had essentially cast her aside. And I feel for Mrjn who was most likely caught in her older sister's argument years prior. I think that the viera siblings spent more time talking at each other than listening too each other.
